What is your biggest lesson learnt

We have all learnt lessons that have shaped how we react to the challenges we face. One of the biggest lessons I have learnt was during my time selling double glazing door to door, commission only. My first day was a Monday and Steve, the training manager, told us that we were due to go out knocking on doors for the first time that Thursday.

He explained that we would knock on 100 doors and that at 99 of them we would be told “no, we are not interested”, and what we needed to remember was that with every “no” we were one door closer to the one that would say “yes”. If you knock on each door expecting a “no” then it is no surprise when that is exactly what you get, so it was important to view each door as the first one that you have ever knocked on.

I think this has stood me in good stead over the years as it taught me the nature of resilience and the importance of how your mindset can impact on outcomes. Many of the people I work fear rejection and this can stop them taking risks. Instead they tend to remain in their comfort zones and don’t exploit their strengths and experience as much as they should do. For example, this can affect coaches who are setting up their own business who find the prospect of selling their services to be daunting. The trick to remember is that every time someone does not buy it just means you are one step closer to the one who will say yes!

What is the biggest lesson learnt for you and how has it affected the way you live your life, manage your career or interact with others?
